Tuesday is the new Monday — over 2 years ago

As lunch conversations go, Tuesday’s was rather a dud, as we never landed on a cohesive topic. We chatted a bit about 2-stroke versus 4-stroke engines. We chatted a bit about the Merlin Mann detente. We talked about wrapping up the latest 43 Places projects before we run off in all directions, trying to live our lives as if we’re on vacation. Then, during the stroll back to the office, Josh tried to convince us that modern-day grudge-holding can be supported by classical views on justice. We sipped our iced coffees and weighed the notion.

To celebrate not owing $17,000 to the IRS, and also to celebrate the idea of starting a seattle interesting fashion/people blog, I've decided to buy a digicam. I haven't owned one since I got a cellphone with camera a couple years ago, and I've never purchased one that I liked. Choice paralysis. I want a small one that can fit in a pocket and that doesn't take blurry pictures and works well in the dark. I don't care about it being more than 5 megapixels. What do you recommend?

On Consciousness — over 2 years ago

Talk today turned to the rather astonishing fact that humans (or animated meat, as we were referring to them) seem to have consciousness. How is that possible, and if possible (and we all agreed it does seem possible), why couldn’t other meat (or, because we are all computer dorks, machines) be animated with consciousness.

The first clue that nobody really knows anything about this topic is that there isn’t even a settled spelling of the subject. We have the “conscious” mind and we have our “conscience” and both refer to the same thing, right? Or do they? In practice, the former is used to describe our self aware mental state, the latter, the virtual organ we credit with moral judgement. But these are the same right? Etymologically, we are looking at words with the same roots, and interestingly, they talk about common knowledge – con scientia – that is “knowing with”.

Explaining how consciousness could exist seems simple until you try. Is consciousness a fundamental aspect of reality – some basic element of life – or does the existence of consciousness depend on other non-conscious elements be they physical, biological, computational, or neural. If you go with the latter – where does the spark come from that turns the ingredients “on” and why couldn’t we reproduce that process to animate some other collection of parts. If you go with the former, prepare to get called a hippy by your co-workers.

Anyway, Todd helped Bob break his losing streak yesterday, and paid for our Thai food. Bob managed to break our blogging streak by going passive aggressive and refusing to pick anyone to write the last blog post – let’s hope we don’t have any more of that. Such emotional robots!

A food for my people: SUSHI MEATBALLS — over 2 years ago

[info]interimlover suggested the title of this post last night at [info]twozdai's art opening when I explained my mixed Swedish/Japanese heritage. It's genius, and it's going to happen! Great show last night Twozdai, thanks for the painting discount!

I sort of love the IRS. They are so beautifully inefficient, but also so used to madness and confusion that it's not necessary at all to really be organized even in the least. I don't keep W2s, or even tax returns lying around, and everyone says you need them but almost always I can just call them, be pleasant, and they will explain to me how I need to keep this form and that form and fill in this box and that box next time, and attach this compliance form, and staple my soul in box 12, and schedule X through elephant on the submarine sassafras columns and this won't happen again. And I thank them, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP, and they fix it over the phone and I roll blissfully unorganized into the next year of quiet desperation. Though, I may start keeping forms just for the aesthetic value of being a person who does such things. Mix things up, try something new, paint my van.

Anyway, today I woke up and screamed, half-delightfully, half-giddy, "I owe the IRS $17,000! And today's the last day to figure it out!" I then dug up that notice, called, used a few choice word combinations that [info]monstermishmisu used on this previous post like non-taxable return of principle and I dropped the d-i-v-o-r-c-e word for sympathy and poof, I'm now square with them.

In other news, my hair is blue now. I got this color by asking which color NOBODY ever chooses. This one was called "Fish Tank" which might explain the lack of enthusiasm (in most people) for the color. Me though, I love fish, and I love tanks. Boom! And, perhaps subconsciously, I might have secretly wanted to turn into an anime character from my homeland.

Here's the plan: arrive in SF, trade compliments and alcohol for couches, roll in grass, don't sleep, paint the bushes red, high five, eat a lot of food, go to Promsumating, Rock Paper Scissors, [info]harryh's birthday bash, explosions, higher highs, lower lows, 100 new inventions, 10 1-on-1 conversations of very important topics, rallying the people, being rallied by the people, burritos in little parachutes raining down from the heavens, and unending laughter until our bellies grow to the size of watermelons, detach, and roll over the cliffs into the ocean. Sound good?
